MTC Week #1

Friends and family,

I am finally in the MTC and absolutely loving it here! My P day for the next five and a half weeks will be on Saturday so that is when you will hear from me during my time here. As soon as I got on the campus here I felt an overwhelming spirit, it truly is amazing. In class the teachers only speak spanish, no english at all, it was so overwhelming and hard but I was so excited to be here it didn't even matter! All the new missionaries, over 500 of us, had a devotional thing the night we got here and we all sang Called to Serve, As Zions Youth in Latter Days and We'll Bring the World His Truth and you could feel the spirit so strong! My companion is Elder Lundell, he is originally from Parker, Colorado but he moved to Lehi about a month ago. We have a lot in common and have worked extremely well together. His Spanish isn't as strong as mine but it is coming along and I have enjoyed being able to help. The gift of tongues is very real! After three days here I can pretty much understand all that my teachers are saying. Now I just have to learn to speak the language! We already taught our first lesson which was a daunting task on our second full day here but it went surprisingly well! I think our "investigator" truly felt the spirit as we testified in spanish to him. We got to meet our branch presidency here on Thursday night and they are all amazing! I can't wait to get to know them better and learn from them. I was asked to be the district leader for our district during our time at the MTC, I gladly accepted. There are 12 missionaries in our district including me and my companion, ten elders and two hermanas. I have already gotten so close to them and care about each and every one of them so much. Ten of us are going to Argentina and two to Bolivia. I had the idea to have all of the missionaries in my district read the book of mormon in spanish before we leave so about 40 days. With 462 pages that is 16 pages a day which doesn't seem like that much but in spanish it took about an hour. I don't think all of the missionaries were to excited about the idea but they all accepted my challenge so I am super excited about that! One of the responsibilities I have as district leader is to get the mail everyday for our whole district. Yesterday I went to pick it up expecting maybe a few letters but the box was overflowing! Many of the missionaries had notices for packages and letters from dearelder.com, it was great to see! I can definitely feel your love and support and really appreciate it! If you would like to write me a letter or send me a package if you feel inclined to do so my address here is:

Anything is greatly appreciated! We had our first gym time here yesterday and of course I played basketball. I wasn't really playing hard because the elders I was playing with weren't the best but they were all like "Wow! You are amazing!" it made me laugh. I still love seeing peoples reactions when they first see me jump! I have also started some good habits while I have been here. I make my bed every morning (yes mom, I actually do!), eat pretty healthy and the most surprising of all take under a ten minute shower! The food here is not bad but I wouldn't say I love it. It definitely isn't as good as a home cooked meal by you mom! I am almost completely used to wearing a watch and CTR ring all the time and I actually kind of like it! The other missionaries have talked about how they feel weird without their phones and how they check their pockets to look at their phone but I haven't done that at all. It's quite nice to be able to not worry about it and get away from the world. I do miss being able to communicate with you all so easily but I know it is a sacrifice that will bless me and my loved ones. Know you are all in my prayers and that I love you all!

Con amor,

Elder Petersen
